Beginning Keto: Swapping High Carb Foods for Low Carb Foods

Welcome to our Beginning Keto series. We are going to share some easy swaps so that you can say goodbye to your high-carb favourites and say hello to your low-carb substitutes - sounds great, doesn’t it?

Before we do, we wanted to let you know what's to come in this series. We'll soon be taking you on a journey to learn about how to measure ketosis, then to learn how to count your macros. Next we'll share some easy keto meal ideals. Each of these puzzle pieces will help you to get a good understanding of the fantastic keto plan and set you up for real success.

Many people on keto still want to enjoy the satisfying taste of carbs. We often hear about people who miss bread, cake, breakfast treats and many other high-carb foods. The great news is that you do not have to spoil your ketosis to enjoy a carb-style treat. Read on to find out more!

Nothing quite beats the taste of fresh bread with high-quality butter, and you’d be forgiven for believing that to be successful on keto, the only part of that equation that you can enjoy would be the butter!

With the rise in popularity of keto, more people are turning to low-carb solutions instead. Our keto bread is flying out of the door because it gives our clients the taste of bread without the stress of carbs. We’ve taste tested many low-carb loaves alongside our own! Look out for our bread review blog!

Pasta and Noodles

Pasta is a store cupboard staple for non-keto’ers, but this has to be removed when you start keto because it is so high in carbs. Pasta is a popular choice in many households due to it’s simple and versatile nature.

If you loved nothing more than pasta with sauce and cheese before, you will be pleased to find out that there are a few great alternatives available in the shops that very nearly taste as great as the original! Our favorite is the this pasta that is made of soy/black beans, as well as their mung bean spaghetti which we also recommend trying! These are great low-carb alternatives to regular pasta - they may be a little too carby for keto but are perfect if you’re cutting down carbs as a way of easing yourself into the keto lifestyle.

Shirataki noodles are also very low in carbs, and so are perfect for the keto diet! These are made from a soluble fiber called glucomannan which comes from the roots of the elephant yam, konjac! Similar to the crisp texture of rice noodles, stir-fry your shirataki noodles, add them to some broth for a hearty ramen, or serve with your favourite homemade pasta sauce! Though be careful! Make sure you check the nutritional information of whichever brand you buy!

Feeling creative? A vegetable alternative to noodles is spaghetti squash! This starchy vegetable is first boiled or baked. Then once cool, simply separate the flesh with a fork into long spaghetti-like strings! You can even try spiralizing vegetables, including zucchini, carrots, turnips and cucumbers. Give it a go and see what you think!

Just like pasta, rice is another popular food choice that needs to be scrapped when you start a keto plan, but that has many alternatives in the local supermarket.

We find that the best alternative for rice is cauliflower rice! Simply buy a whole cauliflower and blitz it into rice-sized flecks and then boil for a few minutes before serving up next to tender meat and fish dishes, it tastes incredible and keeps you in ketosis!

It’s no shock to learn that we are pretty knowledgeable when it comes to keto cake! Before Maya and I started our keto mission, we both loved nothing more than a giant wedge of cake with a decent cup of tea. When we started doing the keto plan, we quickly realised that there were very few substitutes for cake that we could eat and so we took matters into our own hands!

Today, NGB is one of the most popular keto bakeries in the world, and we have a fantastic client-base who support everything we do. The reason we’ve become so popular is because we sell delicious cakes that you can eat on keto and still get the same satisfaction that you may have once gained from a high-carb version instead. Check outour range today and treat yourself!

Potato-Based Foods

Roast potatoes, chips, mash and any other type of potato that springs to mind will have too many carbs for you to be able to indulge in. If you are a massive fan of potato, this can make your transition to keto even harder than you had imagined.

When it comes to swapping potatoes for a low carb alternative, then the most popular options include turnips, swede and even radishes. Prep them the way you’d prep potatoes and then try each one until you find the version that hits the mark. You’d be surprised what can give you that delish potato mash without the carbs. our favorite is caulitflower mash and a homemade cheese sauce. it works wonders!

Ok its no surprise that chocolate contains sugar by the bus load. But going low carb/keto doesnt mean you have to give it up. we sell some of our favourites here and here is a blog that covers the ones that we have tried.

Pancakes and Waffles

If, like us, you are a fan of breakfast and long lazy brunches then you too will have the problem of what to eat. Anyone on the keto plan will understand that eggs are your best friend, but it is essential to change things up a bit when you want to keep your diet fresh!

To help, we have released an amazing keto mix that can be used to make pancakes or waffles, depending on what takes your fancy! Our mixes come ready to whip up, and all you need to do is add egg and the milk of your choice before cooking and demolishing! Take a peekhere to find them.
